Confocal.nl raises €5 Million to expand ground-breaking
live cell microscopy

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 17 October 2024 – Dutch Amsterdam-based technology company Confocal.nl has raised an investment of 5 million euros from a consortium of investors, including ROM InWest and Nascent Ventures from The Netherlands. With this funding, the company will develop further and promote its innovative confocal systems globally. The technology helps scientists to achieve breakthroughs faster, for example, in the field of precision medicines or innovative agricultural research.
Confocal.nl: ‘Live cell imaging for everyone’
Confocal.nl develops and manufactures advanced confocal systems for microscopes that allow scientists to study living cells in an unprecedented way. This is also known as ‘Live cell imaging’. Pim Vos, CEO of Confocal.nl explains: “We are on the eve of major breakthroughs in the medical world, with more researchers working with confocal microscopes. Our technology can make a big difference because it makes this complicated technology more suitable and accessible to a wider group of scientists.”
What makes Confocal.nl unique is the use of minimal laser light at very high resolution, which allows for longer and more reliable observation of living cells. “Traditional microscopes use intensive laser light, which causes cells to behave differently, bleach or die faster. As a result, living cells can only be studied to a limited extent. Our technology prevents this and allows scientists to study processes in living cells for multiple days and more accurately, with results becoming more reproducible. This is crucial for new-drugs research and treatments for complex diseases.” as Pim Vos said.
New investments for further growth
With the investment, Confocal.nl not only wants to further automate its products, but also increase its international brand awareness. “We are going to make our technology more accessible to both the scientific and industrial research world. In addition, we are also investing in our marketing and sales, especially in Europe and the United States,” says Vos.

In addition to funding from the Rabobank Startup & Scale-up team and ‘RvO Innovatiekrediet’, the new investors ROM InWest and Nascent Ventures joined the existing investors and partners such as VCC TechNanoFund, ECFG, University of Amsterdam Ventures, Innovation Fund Noord-Holland. Together with them, Confocal.nl wants to continue to innovate and spread its technology worldwide. Confocal.nl B.V. was founded in 2016 as a spin-off of the University of Amsterdam. With the Dutch origins of microscopy in mind, the company was founded after the invention of the revolutionary ‘REscan confocal technology‘ for better and more reliable image analysis in live cell models. The management has been built up step by step since 2020 and the Confocal.nl team currently consists of highly experienced and motivated experts. The total team consists of 20 people, who work both remotely and from the company’s location at the Amsterdam Science Park.

Confocal.nl: ‘Live cell imaging voor iedereen’
Confocal.nl ontwikkelt en produceert geavanceerde microscopen die wetenschappers in staat stellen om levende cellen op een ongekende manier te bestuderen. Dit wordt ook wel ‘Live cell imaging’ genoemd. Pim Vos, CEO van Confocal.nl legt uit: “We staan aan de vooravond van grote doorbraken in de medisch wereld waardoor er meer mankracht nodig is die met confocale microscopie kan werken. Onze technologie kan daarbij een groot verschil maken, omdat het deze ingewikkelde technologie beter geschikt en toegankelijker maakt voor een bredere groep wetenschappers.”
Wat Confocal.nl uniek maakt, is het gebruik van minimaal laserlicht bij een zeer hoge resolutie, wat een langere en betrouwbaardere observatie van levende cellen mogelijk maakt. Vos: “Traditionele microscopen gebruiken intensief laserlicht, waardoor cellen zich anders gedragen, verbleken of sneller sterven. Daardoor zijn levende cellen maar beperkt te onderzoeken. Onze technologie voorkomt dat en biedt wetenschappers de mogelijkheid om processen in levende cellen langer en nauwkeuriger te bestuderen en worden resultaten beter reproduceerbaar. Dit is cruciaal voor onderzoek naar nieuwe geneesmiddelen en behandelingen voor complexe ziekten.
Nieuwe investeringen voor verdere groei
Met de investering wil Confocal.nl niet alleen zijn producten verder automatiseren, maar ook zijn internationale naamsbekendheid vergroten. “We gaan onze technologie toegankelijker maken voor zowel de wetenschappelijke als industriële onderzoekswereld. Daarnaast investeren we ook in onze marketing en verkoop, met name in Europa en de Verenigde Staten,” vertelt Vos.
